Search for Christmas and the quest for a sausage sandwich

13 December 2009-  We ventured out bright and early (okay gray not bright) to Strasbourg for some Christmas shopping.  We dropped our bags at the hotel and went right out to find lunch.  We were jonesing for a grilled sausage sandwich.

Only where are all the sausage stands?

Not here.

We hit all the little Christmas markets marked on the maps and found no bratwurst stand.  What?  No sausage sandwich.  I know this is France but Strasbourg is a stone's throw from Germany.  Come on now.

You might be the capitale de Noel but your Christmas market stands need a friend of the sausage salesman.

A beautiful Baccarat display but still no sausages.  We returned to the hotel defeated.  But we hatched a good plan.  We went down to the train station for the last market to peruse.  Still no sausages so we hopped a train to Colmar.  We were just in the town this past July for the Tour de France.  They must have the sausage sandwich...

Me and my Target bag going shopping in Colmar.  We found our desired Rauchermann, a little wooden guy dressed in typical mountain town attire that when you insert an incense cone, the smoke comes out thru his little mouth.  We got a beer guy and a hunting guy.  Pictures to come.

Ah, is that what I think it is.

A happy Chad with his biere du Noel and the long searched for sausage sandwich.

also a bigger pretzel than the one I found last year in Stuttgart.  This one costs 10 euro.  No,  I passed.

How gross is this?  Sauerkraut beer.  Yuck, I will pass on that too.  We returned to Strasbourg full of sausage sandwiches.  We got some lovely Christmas items including the number one chocolate from the Salon du Chocolat this fall.  It is really good.  We hopped back on the train to get back to Strasbourg to finish our shopping.

The capital of Christmas does have a beautiful cathedral.  Immense and glorious.  The carvings look like they are out of bronze, the stone was gorgeous.

This is the real reason that Strasbourg is the capital of Christmas.  Not the dancing santa but the hot wine.  Obviously this Santa indulged a bit too much, sloshed it all over his face and beard.  The hot wine was sold in 3 sizes.  20 cl, 30 cl, or 40 cl.  That is right.  You could get almost 16 ounces of wine for 4 euros.  Yowza.  Everyone is drunk in Strasbourg, that is why it is the capital of Christmas.  The decorations are quite pretty and tasteful.  But Chad and I decided that Stuttgart still wins the best Market award.  For food choices (including the sausage sandwich), beer and hot wine, and decorations with the Christmas market stands.
Mailings go out tomorrow so expect them maybe before Christmas.  No guarantees.  Off to work on my window video.  Bon dimanche
