Croatia part 2
15 June 2009- I woke up early in the port of Makarska. The weather had cleared and it was chilly. I snapped a few pictures and then crawled back into the cabin. Got woken up a bit later by the chow bell and the fact we were moving on to the next stop.
We did stop for a quick swim. I will have the video of our boat's antics in the water later. We later arrived at Mljet National Park. A beautiful collection of seaside lakes, craggy mountains and a 12th Century monastery. That was pretty funny. Most of us ran off the boat only to run onto another boat to have a look at the sights inside.
We found our Kiwi contingent having dinner on the harbor. The seafood looked good so we stopped there as well. Didn't have the lobster, a bit rich for this cheapo traveler. Once we were there long enough, the cats started showing up. Not more than a handful but they were ready for any scraps we would be so kind to throw. A few fishermen threw them the innards of that night's catch. I had ordered the grilled squid so they later (and further away from the resto) they got my squid beaks and middles. Our very own Junior waiting for some more petting!
The next morning the boat started heading for the city of Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik was shelled extensively during the war and still bears some scars. Almost every roof in the Old City needed replacing but the city managed to get most of the repairs accomplished in 2 short years. We managed to find not one but two excellent wine bars. One had just recently opened and was so beautiful on the inside. The other I had read about online. The waiter was so nice as we enjoyed a flight of Croatian wines (red for Chad, white for me) that he even wrote down the bus schedule for us so we could avoid calling a cab back to the boat. We climbed and walked the city walls for some amazing views of the city, water and the buildings that make up Dubrovnik.
Dubrovnik at night was stunning. The main drag of the pedestrian zone was this gorgeous limestone which shone in the lights and full moon. A bit more gelato and then we old folks returned to the boat for more shut eye. We had walked quite a bit, must of exhausted ourselves with all that energy we used. Probably the most energy we expended on the trip so far.
Our next day's voyage would take us to the tiny village of Trstenik. A whole 60 people live there. But as if I had planned it, there were not one but two wineries in town. One was even owned by an American who learned the biz from her dad who emigrated from this village to California. We found yet another fantastic and newly opened wine bar. (I know a recurring theme, go figure) The owner was so great to us. He didn't have enough small bills to make correct change so he gave us our money back. We made sure to go see him in the morning for a couple of proper cappucinos before the boat took us to Korcula. That is pronounced Korschula. Without this next stop, many a soul would be lost and a pool game would be nameless.
